Robert James Luedke is one of those special individuals that only come around once in a great while…a true groundbreaker! He has dedicated the last six years of his life to sharing the gospel with young people, through a format that is very popular with teen and young adult readers, but until recently has largely been devoid of works with Christian content…the graphic novel. Partly through his efforts the genre of Christian based comic books and graphic novels is beginning to blossom, as not only are other independent writers and artists using the literary style to express their faith, but major publishers, like Thomas Nelson and Zondervon, have also launched entire lines of titles to address this growing market.
Both Robert and his Eye Witness series, have been featured in such diverse media as: Fox News, L.A Times, The Washington Post, Family Net TV, CBS news, The Harvest Show, The Christian Examiner, Christianity Today, Publishers Weekly, Wizard Magazine, World Magazine and the USA radio network.
He has been called, “One of the leading lights in evangelical comic circles,” by religious writer, David Crumm, (Detroit Free Press & Readthespirit.com). And it seems the world is beginning to take note! His second book in the series, (Eye Witness: Acts of the Spirit), was a winner at the 2007 Hollywood Book Festival (in the category of comics), took a silver medal at the 2007 Independent Publisher Awards, (for graphic novels), and was a finalist in the 2007 FOREWORD Magazine book of the year awards, (for graphic novels).
Robert’s goal for this four book series is to create something that would appeal to who “he was” as a teen…a skeptic who didn’t attend church or ever read the Bible, but loved reading comics. According to Robert, “I try to keep a balance between entertainment and enlightenment. If reading my books leads young people to want to pick up the source material, (the Bible), than I’ve been successful in my God-given mission!” And apparently he is, as pastor/author, Michael Brewer wrote, “Eye Witness will connect with kids who wouldn’t be caught dead reading the Bible!”
Robert’s third book in the Eye Witness series, Rise of the Apostle, will be released in August 2008. The forth and final volume is tentatively scheduled for a late 2010 release. After that, Robert has plans to create a re-mastered single volume of the entire 400+ page epic in digest form, to make it available to even more young readers around the world.
